Principal Investigator
SHEN Yajing Professor
Received his B.S. (2005) and M.S. (2008) degrees from Xi’an Jiaotong University, and his Ph.D. (2012) from Nagoya University. Prior to joining HKUST, he served as Assistant Professor and later Associate Professor at the City University of Hong Kong (2013–2022). He is currently a Professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at HKUST, Director of the Center for Smart Manufacturing, and Associate Director of the HKUST-BYD Embodied AI Joint Lab.
His research focuses on robotics and its applications, particularly in biomedical engineering and human–robot interaction. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers in top multidisciplinary journals (e.g., Science Robotics, Science Advances, Nature Communications, PNAS), leading specialized journals (e.g., IEEE Transactions on Robotics), and premier international conferences (e.g., ICRA, IROS). His work has been widely featured by international media outlets, including the Associated Press, Thomson Reuters, and CCTV.
Prof. Shen served as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Robotics (2019–2022), and is a board member of Engineering, Cyborg and Bionic Systems, among others. His honors include the Best Manipulation Paper Award at ICRA, the IEEE RAS Japan Chapter Young Award, the Big-on-Small Award at MARSS, IEEE Distinguished Lecturer, Best Supervisor Award, the Hong Kong UGC Early Career Award, the “National Excellent Young Scientist”, and recognition in China’s Top 10 Scientific and Technological Advances in Robotics. He is also a member of the Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences and the Hong Kong Young Scientist of Entrepreneur.

Research Assistant Professor
YANG Xiong Research Assistant Professor
Received the B.Eng. degree in Mechanical Engineering and Automation from Northeastern University, Shenyang, China, in 2017, and the Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering from City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, in 2022. He worked as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at City University of Hong Kong (Jun. 2022 – Aug. 2022) and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Oct. 2022 – May. 2023). He is currently a Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research interests include robotics from micro to macro, especially the design, fabrication, modeling and control of miniature robots in biomedical applications and intelligent sensing units in human-robot interactions.

ZHANG Tieshan Post-Doctoral Fellow
Received the B.S. degree from Southwest Petroleum University in 2015, the M.S. degree in mechatronic engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2019, and the Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering from City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, in 2024. He is currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research interests include medical robots and intelligent systems, bio-inspired robots.
LI Gen Post-Doctoral Fellow
Received the B.S. degree from Beijing Institute of technology in 2019, and the Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering from City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, in 2024. He is currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research interests include intelligent sensing systems and devices for biomedical applications.

YANG Jinzhao Post-Doctoral Fellow (香江学者)
Received the B.S. degree from Taiyuan University of Technology in 2015, pursued the M.S. degree in Aerospace Science and Technology, and received the Ph.D. degree in Aerospace Mechanics and Engineering from Dalian University of Technology in 2017 and 2022, respectively. He has been working as a Post-doctoral Fellow at Sun Yat-sen University since 2022 and is currently a Post-doctoral Fellow at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research interests include dynamic modeling and control of continuum robots.
